The City of Highland Park will mark the commencement of the two-year project to upgrade the George B. Prindle Water Treatment Plant with a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15. The plant is located at the east end of Park Avenue at the lakefront.
The facility was built in 1929 and can produce 21 million gallons of water per day. For many years, the summer time demands have approached the Environmental Protection Agency’s permitted threshold. As a result, the city had been exploring increasing plant capacity since the early 1990’s. The project was approved by the city council on Dec. 10, 2012.
The upgrade will incorporate state of the art membrane filtration technology which provides superior protection against waterborne disease organisms while increasing the Plant’s peak production capacity by 50 percent to 30 million gallons daily.
In addition to Highland Park, this facility has provided the water supply for more than thirty years for Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn, Glenbrook Sanitary District and Fort Sheridan. Additionally, the city has the capability to provide water on an emergency basis to Northbrook, Highwood, Lake Forest and Glencoe.
Mayor Nancy Rotering stated, “We invite the public to join us as we break ground at our water treatment plant and improve this critical service to our community. This project will update our water treatment plant, allowing us to produce the highest quality water while generating the necessary capacity.”
