- Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday proposed a new ordinance that would specifically block undocumented immigrants in Chicago from being detained unless they were convicted of a serious crime or wanted on a criminal warrant. Emanuel's proposal, will be a part of the mayor's goal to make Chicago the most immigrant-friendly city in the world. Last summer, the mayor launched the city's new Office of New Americans with the aim of helping both expand opportunities for immigrant business owners and entrepreneurs and to improve immigrant access to city services. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a statement that she supports the mayor's proposal, which she said "furthers our community’s decision to be a fair and equal county for immigrants, and underscores the message that we will not target the undocumented who are here to work hard and obey our laws."
- Tennessee prosecutors have decided not to charge an Algonquin, woman who abandoned her 19-year-old daughter, who has severe developmental disabilities, in a bar and refused to take her back.Police found Lynn Cameron at the Big Orange Bar in Caryville, Tenn. on June 28, where her mother had sent her to use the bathroom and then reportedly drove back to Illinois without her. Lynn Cameron has cerebral palsy, visual impairment and is non-verbal, and for 10 days police canvassed the area and fielded tips before she could be identified and her mother, Eva Cameron, could be contacted.
- Cameron says she drove to Tennessee and left her daughter in the state's care because it has the "No. 1 health care system in the United States of America," and would be better able to provide for Lynn than her family, which was overextended caring for her sibling.
- Dozens of animals, including almost 40 cats and three dogs, were removed from a Berwyn home Monday afternoon. Though neighbors had been complaining about the home's smell for months, the area heat made the odors impossible to ignore any longer. While investigating the complaints, police were allowed entry into the home and discovered that dozens of animals, some of them "sickly" in appearance, were living inside among large amounts of animal feces and generally "horrid" conditions.
- Some Barrington residents say they were scammed by a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm, which took their money and did not deliver the produce shares. Freedom Organix, out of Harvard, advertised drop-off points in numerous Lake County suburbs and Chicago neighborhoods.
- Lake Forest 13-year-old Brad Czerniejewski has been turning heads with his bat. The eighth-grader who plays on Lake Forest Scouts Baseball has hit 48 homeruns in two seasons. This season he’s had 101 RB!s.
