Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) talks to youngsters during Libertyville's Memorial Day events Monday.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) spent part of Memorial Day Monday walking in parades and talking to gatherings in Libertyville, Round Lake and North Chicago to honor veterans and members of the military.

“Military service has always been one of the greatest responsibilities and highest honors a citizen can perform for his or her country,” Schneider said. “The two million men and women of our armed forces and 22 million veterans have sacrificed an incredible amount for our nation and they’ve earned our deepest respect and gratitude.

While remembering members of the military who died in action, Schneider also gave a special thanks to current members of the United States armed forces. “Today, we remember those who gave their lives, but it is also a day when we remember those who are wearing the uniform now,” he said.

Schneider also stressed helping both military families and veterans. He believes spouses and children of members of the armed forces make contributions as well.

“We can and should commit to working to expand opportunities to more veterans and more military families,” Schneider said. “That means understanding that service is a call answered by the entire family. We must support veterans when they return and families while husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters are away."
