The superintendents of both of Highland Park's school districts will take your questions at a public forum on Thursday evening.

Curious about whether or not there will be another referendum to renovate Highland Park High School? Wondering what Highland Park's elementary and middle school district will do if its teachers go on strike? Here's your chance to get answers straight from the source.

The event will be held on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Heller Nature Center. It's been organized by the Highland Park League of Women Voters. The superintendents will speak about the two districts' long-range vision and then take questions from the public, according to league president Barbara Lippai.

"We had this planned quite a while ago, even before they put out their intent to go out on strike," Lippai said.

The forum will be held days before District 112's teachers have planned to go on strike. They've been working without contracts since August, and negotiations between them and the school board have not yet been resolved.

"We have our ear to the ground," Lippai said.

The league recently began gathering information from District 112 to get a better understanding of the district's finances. Though this forum is part of that information gathering process, it is also designed to give residents a better understanding of how their schools operate.

"Our goal is not just to study for the sake of study," Lippai said, "but to educate the public."

Asked if Lippai expects a raucous crowd, she replied that the league will be doing "best we can to keep it an upbeat civilized conversation."

Candidate debate this Sunday

The forum is one of several events the League of Women Voters has planned for the political season. Candidate debates for upcoming elections will be held on Oct. 14 and 21 as well. The League also recently published its Voters' Guide, which has information on every candidate running for office in the Nov. 6 election.

"Part of our mission is to encourage active participation in government, and what is more active than voting," Lippai said.

Lippai commended the residents of Highland Park for maintaining an avid interest in the city's politics.

"I think that people really do watch their governments in Highland Park and they come to very strong opinions and they're very vocal about their opinions," Lippai said. "What the League tries to do is pull things together that are neutral. That's a really important role for us in this community."
