The muffled sound of gloved hands clapping could be heard from Memorial Park on Monday morning as Highland Park held its Veterans Day ceremony.

A few dozen people, including newly elected officials like Julie Morrison, Brad Schneider and Scott Drury, attended the ceremony. Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering spoke, as well as state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park), Highland Park Military Liaison William Schur, Naval Station Great Lakes Captain Randall John Lynch and 16th Psychological Operations Battalion Commander LTC John Novak.
"It was very special to see so many people turn out to honor our veterans on such a chilly day," Rotering said in an email after the event:
This year marked the beginning of a new way that the city is celebrating our veterans events. We are bringing together representatives from all three of our veterans organizations and we are now highlighting Heroes Among Us, veterans who are or were residents and their unique stories. We were honored to have terrific speakers today, each with an important message focusing on our returning veterans and our pledge to support them when they return.
