Police charged a Chicago man with felony theft by deception after they caught him soliciting money for a fake funeral for an Evanston teen, according to the Chicago Tribune.
James Myers, 19, of the 6800 block of S. Dorchester St. in Chicago, was arrested after officers responded to a public complaint of an unwanted solicitor in Highland Park, police said.
When police questioned him, Myers said he was "seeking donations to help with the funeral costs of a youth killed in Evanston,"the Tribune reports. Myers also said that a Skokie funeral home would match the cost of donations, but when police called the funeral home, they said they were not involved, according to the Tribune.
Myers raised $161 before he was arrested, the Tribune reports.
