Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers didn’t even get wet today, but he will still have a chance at a gold medal.

Grevers gave way to Nick Toman in today’s preliminary heat of the men’s 4 x 100 medley relay in London Olympics.

Toman, who was second to Grevers in the 100 meter backstroke on Monday, joined Eric Shanteau, Tyler McGill and Cullen Jones in Friday’s preliminary race. The group swam the fastest time of the two preliminary heats with a 3:32.65 clocking.

In tomorrow’s final, those four will be replaced by Grevers, Michael Phelps, Brendan Hansen and Nathan Adrian for the 4 x 100 medley relay final at 2:27 p.m. Saturday Chicago time and 8:27 p.m. in London.

The U.S. team is a strong favorite for the gold medal in the 4 x100 medley relay since Grevers won gold in the backstroke, Phelps a gold medal in the butterfly and Adrian a gold medal in the freestyle while Hansen earned a bronze medal in the breaststroke.

Should the Americans win in the final event of Olympic swimming, Grevers would come away with two gold medals and a silver medal from the men's 4 x 100 freestyle relay.
