What was initially looking like a non-event as of late last night, with just 1-3 inches of snow expected, has turned into a major snowfall that is already resulting in after-school activities being canceled in many districts.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until midnight for Lake and McHenry Counties, with 4 to 8 inches of snow expected. Snow is expected to fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times this afternoon.
Snowfall totals are already being reported by trained spotters and local officials. As of 2 p.m., Lake Bluff had already received 1 inch of snow, .7 of which fell within an hour.
"Moderate snow falling. Roads are snow-covered," a trained spotter in Lake Bluff reported.
