(Update 2:15 p.m.) Winnetka native and Loyola Academy alum Conor Dwyer fell shy of an Olympic medal today with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle in 3:46.39, .15 seconds slower than his preliminary heat.
The race was won by China’s Sui Yang in a world record time of 3:40.18 with South Korea’s Pak Taew-hwan earning the silver medal and Peter Vanderkaay of the United States wining bronze.
(Earlier 1 p.m.)In one of the first Olympic events, Conor Dwyer was one of the fastest.
The Winnetka resident, Lake Forest Swim Club member and Loyola Academy alum had the third-fastest time in the 400-meter freestyle qualifying swim today registering a 3:46.24. Dwyer finished behind Yang Sun of China (3:45.07) and fellow American Peter Vanderkaay 3:45.80.
He will take a break in the first full day of Olympic competition before going for the gold in the 400-meter finals at approxinately 1:50 p.m. local time.
The 400-meter freestyle event comprises eight lengths of the pool. Swimmers dive in to start and must touch the side of the pool in their turns.
